Synopsis

It’s early days in Ragnar Kjartansson’s career and yet he has already made an impact on the international art scene with original and creative artwork. As if I Existed centres around Ragnar Kjartansson´s exhibition at the 2009 Biennale, but it also takes a look at the artist in his day-to-day life, at his earlier works and his past. Ragnar is an open and sincere character, charming and unafraid to open up on camera. He is, and always has been, influenced by the theatre, Romanticism, nostalgia and grandeur. This holds true both in his life and in his art; each and every day in Ragnar’s life is almost like a play or a performance. The film underlines his compulsion to role-play. The film will probe under the surface and study his dreams, his expectations, insecurities and his sense of identity during this important time in his life.
