Icelanders at the Berlinale

Serveral Icelandic projects will be presented at the upcoming Berlinale, and two Icelandic artists are in the official selection. 
The Icelandic films And Breathe Normally and Ploey will be screening at the EFM Market screenings

Icelandic projects in the Berlinale Co-Production Market

A White, White Day
A White, White Day,
the new project from Hlynur Pálmason (Winter Brothers) fresh off of Rotterdam's CineMart, is one of only two projects on the Rotterdam-Berlinale Express. The project recently won the ARTE Award at CineMart.

A White, White day follows Ingimundur, a responsible father, widower, and small-town sheriff. In the process of building a house for his daughter and granddaughter, he becomes obsessed with finding the man he suspects was involved in his wife's disappearance. Revenge, grief, and unconditional love permeate this modern mystery thriller.


The Berlinale Co-Production Market will take place February 17-21.   

 

Black Port

The dramatic TV series Black Port, which deals with the consequences of fishing monopolies on a village community, is one of eight projects selected for CoPro Series, a specialized pitching and networking event organized by the Berlinale Co-Production Market on February 21.

Black Port will be directed by Björn Hlynur Haraldsson and Gísli Örn Gardarsson, written by Mikael Torfason and produced by Vesturport. 

 

Two Icelandic artists in the official selection 

Maria Solrun's Adam screening in the Generation section 
Adam was written and directed by Maria Solrun and produced by Maria Solrun, Jim Stark, and Magnús Maríuson, who also plays the film's leading role. 
The film is Maria Solrun's second feature. Her first film, Jargo, also premiered at the Berlinale, in 2004.


Tómas Lemarquis stars in Touch Me Not 

Touch Me Not was written and directed by Romania's Adina Pintilie, and is her first feature. The film will have its world premiere in the festival's main competition.

Tómas Lemarquis made his breakthrough when he starred in Dagur Kári's Noi the Albino in 2003. More recently he has appeared in Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer and in Hollywood productions such as Blade Runner 2049, X-Men: Apocalypse, and 3 Days to Kill. In Iceland he has also starred in the 2009 feature December and will soon appear as one of the leads in the upcoming film Mihkel. He has also played prominent roles in films and TV series throughout Europe, including in Germany, France, Denmark, and Spain.

Other Icelandic talent at the Berlinale 


Erlingur Jack Gudmundsson in Berlinale Talents

Erlingur Jack Gudmundsson will be participating in Berlinale Talents this year with his project Levels. Gudmundsson will be directing and producing the film, which is written by Davíd Már Stefánsson.

Levels, which is described as a fantasy/science fiction project, follows a man who wakes up on a deserted island only to find out he is being haunted by another person.

Herdís Stefánsdóttir at Berlinale Lounge Night
The Icelandic musician Herdís Stefánsdóttir will be performing in the Audi Lounge on Saturday, Feburary 17 at 20:00. She will be acompanied by Baldur Hjörleifsson.

Stefánsdóttir is a songwriter and electronic musician who composes for various media, including museum installations and dance and theater performances. Some of her most recent work can be heard in the short film Besida, which is screening in the Berlinale Shorts program.
