The Icelandic Film Centre initiates a pilot project in sustainable filmmaking

In accordance with the objectives of Iceland‘s Film Policy 2020-2030 aimed at increasing sustainability in filmmaking, the Icelandic Film Center has initiated a one-year pilot project aimed at collecting data on carbon emissions during the production of selected projects.

The Icelandic Film Center has in this regard entered into a collaboration with Green Producers Club for the use of a carbon calculator. Gísli Snær Erlingsson, Director of the Icelandic Film Center, and Mads Astrup Rønning, founder of the Green Producers Club, signed a cooperation agreement to this effect at the Grósku Idea House in Reykjavík today, April 9th.

Brita Synnøve Holt Vistnes project manager at Green Producers Club, Anton Máni Svansson chairman of SÍK, Anna María Karlsdóttir consultant at the Icelandic Film Centre, Karólína Stefánsdóttir from consulting company USE SEE, Gísli Snær Erlingsson director of the Icelandic Film Centre and Mads Astrup Rønning founder of GPC.

For this purpose the Green Producers Tool (GPT), which is widely used in the Nordic countries, has been chosen. Consideration has been given to regional factors in calculating carbon emissions, and the project aims to shed light on the carbon footprint of film production in Iceland and ways to reduce it.

The use of the tool is tied to membership in the Green Producers Club.

Production companies who use the tool and have received production grants (or letter of commitment) and commence filming between April 15, 2024, and May 1, 2025, can receive support from the Icelandic Film Centre equivalent to the membership fee for one year.

Membership fees are based on the scale of projects, as shown in the following examples:

  • < 100.000.000, -ISK
    Membership fee: EUR 1.000
  • 100.000.000 – 400.000.000, -ISK
    Membership fee: EUR 2.000
  • > 400.000.000, -ISK
    Membership fee: EUR 4.000

The pilot project offers a unique opportunity for production companies to adopt environmentally friendly practices. Concurrently, the IFC will participate in the ongoing development of the calculator for Icelandic conditions.

An Icelandic office of the Green Producers Club has been established , with  the Association of Icelandic Film Producers (SÍK) already becoming members.

If producers choose to use other equivalent calculators, the IFC will also offer support during this period.
