HEARTSTONE wins big at Warsaw Film Festival
Heartstone, the debut feature from Icelandic writer/director Gudmundur Arnar Gudmundsson's, has won three awards in the main competitive section of the recently concluded Warsaw Film Festival in Poland: Gudmundsson himself won the best director award, the lead actor Baldur Einarsson won a special mention for his performance and the film won the Ecumenical award.
In justifying its decision, the Ecumenical jury wrote that Heartstone was awarded for its “vast expression of childhood, close to nature in a remote village of Iceland. Turning teenagers into beautiful landscapes, two boys, linked by a strong friendship, have their feelings evolve as they find their personal identity. Reflecting the contemporary society, their relationship will have to coexist along with their family members and friends, boys and girls, and the gossip that is being spread around. In a delicate way, the film proves the human ability to be reborn.”
Gudmundsson attended the festival, where he was able to accept all three awards in person. Incidentally, Gudmundsson's short film Whale Valley won for Best Live Action Short at the Warsaw Film Festival in 2013.
Heartstone had its world premiere in the Venice Days section of the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Queer Lion Award. It has also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Busan International Film Festival. Upcoming stops include Film Fest Gent in Belgium, the Chicago International Film Festival, CPH PIX in Denmark, the Sao Paulo International Film Festival in Brazil and the Thessaloniki International Film festival in Greece.
