Icelandic composer Hildur Gudnadottir nominated for a Golden Globe
Icelandic composer Hildur Gudnadóttir has received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Score for the feature film Women Talking by Sarah Polley. The nominations, as chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, were revealed yesterday .
Gudnadóttir became the first woman to win for best original score at the Golden Globes, in 2020, for her work on Joker, for which she also received an Oscar.
In Polley's film, which is based on a novel by Miriam Toews, women of an isolated religious community grapple with reconciling a brutal reality with their faith.
In a recent interview with Variety , Gudnadóttir noted that she and Polley were "very stationary" with the film's locale: "So in order to feel like we're going somewhere, the music has to help us with that. And I was just so angry on behalf of these women that I had a hard time finding forward movement, because I was just furious, you know? I was oftentimes just kind of paralyzed on behalf of these women, I was just so angry and sad. It was hard for me to find hope amid such evil. But I think we found a really nice way of being hopeful without being sappy, and being emotional without being overly manipulative emotionally."
The 80th annual Golden Globe Awards will be held on January 10, 2023, in Los Angeles.
